Concept Sketching
Design Inspiration
Using basic shapes, materials, and vibrant colors, this project aimed to express style through simplicity with a condensed project duration, ie. a design sprint. The origin for this prompt came from a course called Form of Function in which the primary goal is communicating the functionality of a design through visual and tactile elements.
Fusion360 Renders
The CAD models for the stereo were produced in Fusion360 and rendered in program to save time in the design sprint. Given the retro inspiration behind this style, the bright colors and overall simplicity were meant to communicate sharp visuals and an intuitive user experience. Each button is targeting a positive tactile experience through material, with the large dial also being a push button that gives haptic feedback to the user.
Physical Processes
The base of the stereo is made from cut poplar that was joined and planed to be square. Then the interior curve was rough cut on a bandsaw and sanded down to a smooth fit with the radius of an iPhone. Each edge is sanded down to a safe fillet to prevent discomfort when handling the object. The large dial is used to control volume and can be pressed to turn the stereo on and off. From left to right the buttons along the base include rewind, play/pause, and skip.
